2:12. Issuing Force

It’s been discussed at length in popular texts that humans are somehow averse to killing one another. When I first read this notion, I was long past my personal era of violence. Nonetheless, I was bewildered that such a notion could be held, let alone be held in such high regard. Had these experts never encountered killers in their “studies”? How could this be when I have personally known so many?

To be honest, I am fairly certain that I do know the answer to why highly-regarded or at least popular “experts” would have the view that humans would nearly always tend to posture rather than issue deadly force. I believe it has to do with the sample demographic used in such “studies” and interviews. I have seen evidence of this after entering into the professional training world and dealing with average civilians, law enforcement officers and military personnel.

The first time I encountered someone openly unwilling to use deadly force against another human being was in a class of civilians fulfilling requirements to get their concealed weapons permits. There, I encountered people who were scared for their safety but were also very non-violent in their nature and past experiences. It was actually a common enough dilemma that I had developed several techniques for dealing with it.

I remember one charming elderly lady who had attended the class with her husband. The pair were in their 80’s and living in a neighborhood that had fallen victim to poverty like so many, probably a great place when they moved there 40 years ago but not a safe place today. You could tell they were deeply in love and probably had been married for 60 years or so. Her husband was a small, quiet guy, and she did most of the talking.

When the discussion of killing came up, she was forthright about her unwillingness to ever do it. I questioned her about it as a class discussion, even putting the criteria on her that the person would be trying to kill her. She didn’t care; she still did not think she could use deadly force on someone, even if they were using deadly force on her.

Seeing how deeply in love they were, I asked her if she could do it in defense of her husband. I said, “What if a bad guy was standing over him with a knife about to stab him, and you had your revolver a few feet away? Could you save him?”

“Absolutely! I would shoot them to save him.” Ok, this is progress. “But you still wouldn’t stop someone from hurting you if it meant you might kill them?” She responded, “No, I just couldn’t do it.”

I then told her, “You clearly love your husband, right? Now, think about this, imagine if something happened to you and you suddenly were not around anymore? Do you think that would hurt your husband?”

“Yes, of course, it would,” she responded.

I then told her, “Imagine how incredibly sad he would be, missing you every day.
